The celebrities chasing casino profits off the gambling floor

24 Feb 2017

It’s no secret that many of the world’s best-known casinos are not entirely locations where visitors gamble chips against the house.

Many also offer other forms of entertainment, pleasure and therapy as a way of de-stressing from the regular grinds of day-to-day life. This includes a plethora of stores and boutiques to peruse.

Celebrities are no strangers to branching out into this field, using their name and following to help get projects off the ground.

Jennifer Lopez has a clothing collection in the American department store Kohl’s, Nicole Richie has won an award for her House Of Harlow jewellery line and tennis champion Serena Williams’ Signature Statement clothing range is sold exclusively on Home Shopping Network.

Others go one step further to run their own independent stores on desirable shopping promenades. These include the Olsen twins, Ashley and Mary-Kate, housing their fashion store The Row in Los Angeles, Jessica Alba’s cosmetic’s line Honest Beauty is in the same California city and Reese Witherspoon houses her Draper James lifestyle brand in both Texas and Tennessee.

However, there are some celebrities who decide that having their stand-alone stores prominent in a casino resort is best for business. If nothing else, such a location promises heavy foot traffic.

Here are three which have made this decision:

Sarah Jessica Parker

It would have been expected that the Sex And The City star would open her first SJP store in New York City given the success of the series, but instead the shoe and apparel line will open at the new MGM National Harbor casino in Maryland.

The store will showcase her lines of shoes that were previously available across various department outlets, alongside a newer collection of little black dresses and jewellery.

Plans for a future boutique in the Big Apple and MGM installing something similar at its Las Vegas stronghold have also been mooted for the future.

As for the National Harbor casino, over 125,000 square feet of space is dedicated solely to the gaming floor. More than 3,300 slot machines will occupy a portion of this space, alongside poker and a collection of other table games.

The entire MGM National Harbor is said to have cost somewhere in the region of $1.3 billion to build.

Nas is far from the first recording musician to sideline away from music into alternate business ventures.

P. Diddy has established the Sean John brand, beginning with a clothing line and then also including a men’s perfume, Jay Z’s business empire includes being the co-founder of urban clothing brand Rocawear and Pharrell Williams helped create the streetwear brand Billionaire Boys Club.

Almost two years ago Nas teamed up with Nick Sakai, who had experience in running small footwear shops, to set up 12am Run, with the sneaker store positioned on the centre of the Las Vegas Strip directly under the world’s largest Ferris Wheel.

12am Run is present in the shopping promenade at The LINQ, which also features a casino encompassing 118,000 square feet. Included in this space is just shy of 1,000 slot machines and 55 table games.

Chester Bennington

Rock band Linkin Park formed back in 1996, but it wasn’t until 1999 that Bennington joined as lead vocalist.

Prior to his big break in music, in the mid 1990s, Bennington created the Club Tattoo studio, with a home within the Planet Hollywood resort and casino in Las Vegas. A second Vegas venue has since been opened in The LINQ.

US Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, Miley Cyrus and Slash from Guns N’ Roses are among the famous faces to have paid a visit.

Features of the Planet Hollywood resort are a casino containing a three-acre floor and the decision of having young women in ‘chic lingerie’ dealing table games.

And one that is no longer trading …

The Kardashian sisters

Any viewers of Keeping Up With The Kardashians will be aware of their clothing and accessory boutique DASH, which currently has stores across three US locations – Los Angeles, Miami and New York.

However, the sisters – Kim, Kourtney and Khloe – also previously owned a celebrity lifestyle boutique called Kardashian Khaos, which opened at The Mirage Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

The store sold a range of products endorsed by the family members, ranging from key chains to T-shirts to water bottles.

But after three years in existence, Kardashian Khaos closed in 2014.
