Bodog loses domain name
One of the giants of the online gambling world, Bodog, has sensationally lost its domain name, Bodog.com, in a lawsuit filed by the Las Vegas company 1st Technology LLC.
1st Technology claim that software downloaded by Bodog customers infringed upon their patents. 1st Technology LLC obtained a $48.6 million default judgement back on June 14 against Bodog which the company failed to answer, most probably fearing action from the U.S Department of Justice.
As a result, Bodog have now lost their domain name and nothing exists at Bodog.com. However, Bodog founder Calvin Ayre has moved swiftly and set up www.newbodog.com, where players can continue playing and betting and has released a small statement regarding the matter.
He claims the domain name trouble is “the result of a legal dispute over the ownership of the Bodog.com domain name.” Ayre goes on to explain that they will fight the dispute and is confident that they will win.
Full and frank details of the dispute are thin on the ground as there is no public record of the ruling by the court.
However, the loss of business to Bodog could be worth more than the $48.6 million they had to pay to 1st Technology LLC. Bodog have always ranked well in search engines, such as Google, for sought after gambling keywords like “sports betting” and “online betting” but now any potential customers who arrive at the old domain will simply go somewhere else.
