Virgin Mary in Ireland Odds
Never one to shy away from controversy (let’s remember that this is the bookies which offered odds on which airline company would go bust next), Paddy Power are now offering odds on when the Blessed Virgin will next appear in Ireland. These rather strange novelty odds stem from the recent news that residents in Limerick, Ireland, have “organised a petition” to save a tree stump which was due to be dug out, after an image of the Virgin Mary appeared in it.
While the incident has been treated rather tongue-in-cheek by newspapers, local businessman Seamus Hogan spoke to The Independent about why the stump is so important to the Limerick community:
“We are not venerating the tree; we are venerating Our Lady, whose image we receive from it. It is the same as a marble statue inside the church.”
If you reckon you know where Our Lady will next appear in Ireland (it has to be this year, 2009) then you can place a bet on one of the following locations:
- Knock Shrine 5/1
- Croagh Patrick 8/1
- Lough Derg 10/1
- Glen Columbkille 10/1
- Glendalough 12/1
- Clonmacnoise 18/1
- Ballinspittle 20/1
- Galway Races 50/1
The sighting has to be the first official one reported by RTE News. To place a bet on the Blessed Virgin, visit Paddy Power now.
